What did he do to deserve it?

Today, our president of the United States, was named the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. I was surprised to find this bit of news waiting for me in my e-mail this morning, as a news alert from the New York Times. I knew that several people were not going to be happy with this development.

I didn’t expect such a public firestorm.

I arrived at my office to my boss complaining, with the words of the title of this post emanating from his office. I’ve heard similar sentiments from others who might or might not be like minded, namely Rush Limbaugh and Michael Steele (both of whom should try to run for President some day – it would be great for comedy).

One of my staffers greeted me with: “Did you see what your ‘boy’ did today?”

Unfortunately, that’s just it: President Barack Obama didn’t do anything, except espouse the belief that America (and thus the world) would be better off if it were to use its power for peaceful purposes rather than running rough-shod over the world the way the previous administration did. As such, it’s my opinion (which is worth roughly $0.02 today) that the President is eminently qualified as a Nobel laureate.

As I alluded to in a comment about a previous news article attributed to Rush Limbaugh: We turned that corner on November 4, 2008, in this country, and, my friends, we would be wise to not look back (except, of course, to help fix the mess that you see in the rearview mirror).

The Miami Progressive visits DC…

So, I took my family to DC this week, and we’ve been seeing several different museums. My attendance at these museums is due to a training event that I was supposed to be enrolled in being cancelled, but my travel being booked and costing as much or more than the original tickets to change.

As I was walking down the National Mall today, from the National Museum of Natural History, all the way west to the Lincoln Memorial, I passed several different groups of people wearing the “Taxed Enough Already” shirts. One of these groups had a lady wearing one such shirt and she was talking about enjoying her trip to the museums, the monuments, etc.

So I got to thinking…

What’s so good about these museums? What’s so good about this National Mall? I mean, they are, after all, paid for with the tax dollars that the shirts imply these people were protesting.

Of course, I’m VERY well aware that these folk had a specific agenda: namely, they don’t want their tax dollars to be spent on HEALTHCARE for all. The same “all” who may, returned to health, help contribute more to the economy.

But in actuality, what IS the real difference?

I mean, you pay for one social program, and soon all the other ones come knockin’. You pay for healthcare, and pretty soon people are going to want the government to pay for education, or defense, or maintenance of a national highway system, or a national retirement system, right?

Oh wait…

La mejora Sotomayor…

It’s been a while since I’ve written here; however, someone walked up to me in conference yesterday and asked if I write this blog. That has given me some renewed vigor in terms of writing this blog. I also hadn’t known that the only progressive talk radio station in town has changed format – again. So, I think for this post, I’ll take on Barack Obama’s pick to replace Justice David Souter, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, a judge on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Second District.

Judge Sotomayor graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1976, and received her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1979. Like her nominator, President Barack Obama, Sotomayor has not only practiced law, but has also taught law at New York University School of Law and at Columbia Law School. Raised primarily by her mother, she is of Pureto Rican descent, having grown up in The Bronx borough of New York City. However, her intellect has been called into question by “leading” Republican politicos, while she has been denounced as a racist by some others. Let’s address first the claim that Sotomayor is a racist.

The claim that Judge Sotomayor is a racist has been made by several high-profile members of the Republican Party, including Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich. This is based on the fact that Sotomayor has indicated in the past that it would be difficult to separate her upbringing from the day-to-day task of ruling on cases which she faces as a jurist. Similar statements have been made by other, more conservative-leaning nominees, to the highest court in the land. For example, Justice Samuel Alito has said pretty much the same thing. My opinion on this is simply that we all grow up in different communities, each of which shape our own backgrounds. It is difficult, if not impossible, to separate one’s shaping from one’s actions in life.

Insofar as Judge Sotomayor’s intellect is concerned, Karl Rove seems to have some questions about the intellect of someone who graduated with highest honors from Princeton, who graduated Yale Law and sat on their Law Review. Makes me wonder what he truly thought of his former boss… who also went to prestigious schools, but who obviously didn’t graduate with similar praise.

Your thoughts, as always, are welcome…

Obama as Socialist…

Living in Miami, with its large Spanish-speaking population, one gets a sense of what the concern is with Obama and his sometimes leftward-leaning rhetoric.  Many people who now live here come from Cuba, where the last revolutionary leader to espouse “Change” (somewhat) in the way Obama is, was Fidel Castro.

Obama is talking about Change in a big, big way.  A fundamental change.  But I think the message that is lost on most people who are concerned about what Obama is saying is that he wants to bring hope, not just change.

There is very little chance that any single person here will be able to change the country into a socialist land.  Not without convincing at least 60% of the congress that that would be the best thing for the country…  And then it would require a 2/3 vote of the states.  It isn’t going to happen.

The power of the President is in his power to motivate the country to produce… the power of the President to nominate… the power of the President to set the tone.

McCain’s tone is increasingly negative.  And I won’t talk about his pick for Vice President… she is not qualified.

This ran on CNN right after last night’s debate…

If my wife and I had become pregnant when we were boyfriend and girlfriend, I don’t know what we would have done.  I can’t condone the use of abortion as birth control.

The case of the woman in the video above, though, does show one reason why I support the right of individual choice.  Frankly, what anyone else does with their body is none of my business – and I should have no right to regulate it.

So… Are we better off? Or aren’t we?

Apparently, John McCain was interviewed this morning on the Today Show, and told reporters that the answer to that question was “no.” Yet last week, his answer was somewhat different.

You can see more here at Think Progress.

The economy is in collapse, as is our war-weary military. Could we still take on another war? Perhaps, but I’m sure our military leaders don’t really want to have to answer that question.

Are you better off?

Clinton or Obama? Gender less important to young voters.

I found this article in the Christian Science Monitor today, though it was published on the 20th. I found it to be interesting, and, at least in my case, quite true.

I truly believe I am an equal-opportunity employer.

Clinton or Obama? Gender less important to young voters.:
As Obama gains, he whittles Clinton’s lead among baby-boomer women.

Don’t just take my word for it…

A coworker of mine sent me an article today from the DailyKos’s blog.  The article is from the “GrassRoots Mom” section on the DailyKos.  If you’re on the fence about supporting Obama or Clinton, I suggest you read it, and then MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION.

In essence, the author of the article looked at the Library of Congress’s website about bills that were authored by either senator.  The author was swayed to the Obama camp by the veracity of his bills.

Joe gets it…

And I don’t mean that turncoat, Joe Lieberman, but rather Joe Scarborough from MSNBC.

When I’ve been asked who I support for the Democratic Party’s primary race, I originally backed John Edwards, primarily because of his messages on poverty and healthcare. After Edwards stepped aside earlier this year, I very easily, perhaps too easily, was willing to switch my allegiance to Barack Obama, the senator from Illinois.

But I wasn’t able to put a finger on why.

Was it because Hillary was old-school? Was it because I couldn’t stand her? Certainly not. I hardly know her, so it couldn’t be either of those. In fact, I couldn’t put a finger on why.

While waiting for the bus this morning, I was GoogleNewsing on my BlackBerry, and found this linked article from Joe Scarborough in the Pensacola News-Journal, which, for better or worse, was able to articulate my feelings on the matter quite well.

Now, I have a place in my heart for Bill Clinton, because I think he is one of the best leaders this country has ever had, so I take with a grain of salt what Mr. Scarborough has to say about him; however, if he has, indeed, acted the way it was depicted in the article, I must say that I would be very disappointed. However, the comments about Mr. Clinton notwithstanding, I favored more the comments about Mr. Obama than anything else.

Besides… we’re not voting for Bill Clinton – he can’t run again… and we can’t move this country forward by looking at the rearview mirror.

It’s time for a change in leadership and leadership style. We need someone who is charismatic, who can rekindle the American spirit… someone like Barack Obama.

Dear President Bush: Now What?

The New York Times reported yesterday that “Musharraf’s Party Accepts Defeat”.

In the as-free-and-fair-as-they-could-be parliamentary elections that were held in Pakistan, voters handed a stunning defeat to the party of the country’s current president, Pervez Musharraf. But what, exactly, does this mean to the people of the United States?

Our executive administration has repeatedly shown a propensity to rely solely on a “Plan A” without having a viable back-up plan. It’s going to be interesting to see what our fearless leadership will do in light of this recent shoot-down of their “Plan A” plan.

What’s next, George?
